Robert A. Keller, MD is a Board-Certified specialist in the field of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr Keller also possesses exclusive subspecialty certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine which is only attainable by Board-Certified orthopedic surgeons who have demonstrated qualifications in sports medicine beyond other orthopaedic surgeons by virtue of additional training, a practice characterized by a volume of cases in sports medicine and making significant contributions to this field.
Dr. Keller provides minimally-invasive, state-of-the-art surgical techniques for his patients. His practice has an emphasis on:
- Shoulder surgery (Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilization/labrum repair, Superior Capsular Reconstruction)
- Knee surgery and ligament reconstruction (ACL, meniscus, cartilage surgery)
- Shoulder replacement (including conventional and reverse replacement)
- Elbow arthroscopy & ligament reconstruction (Tommy John surgery)
- Hip arthroscopy (labral repair)
Dr. Keller has a special interest in caring for athletes of all ages and has recently been the head team physician for Universities and High Schools. Dr. Keller also served as the head orthopedic consultant for the PGA tour in Michigan.
Driven by the desire to obtain optimal outcomes for his patients, Dr. Keller continues to publish and present clinical and laboratory research both nationally and internationally. Dr. Keller has led cutting edge research on the highest level of athletes, publishing studies on NFL, NBA, and MLB athletes. He has specific interest, including multiple publications, with Tommy John surgery and ACL surgery. He is also a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
A native of San Diego, CA, Dr. Keller attended college at Washington University in St. Louis, where he was the captain and leading scorer of the men’s basketball team. He then graduated with Honors from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Residency training was completed in Orthopedic Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. While in residency, Dr. Keller was honored by being named Chief Resident, winning the Outstanding Resident Teacher Award, winning a variety of resident research awards, and developed multiple healthcare related patents. Dr. Keller then completed a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at the world renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, CA. While in LA, Dr. Keller was an assistant team physician to numerous professional and college teams including the Los Angeles Rams, LA Dodgers, LA Kings, Anaheim Ducks, and USC Football. Dr Keller then spent 3 years building one of the busiest sports medicine practices in Michigan before having the opportunity to join one of the best orthopedic practices in the world, OrthoCarolina.
Dr. Keller is a member of many professional organizations, including: American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Dr. Keller is also a loving husband and proud father to 3 children.
